US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Ambassador Sergio Gor concluded his three-day visit to Bangladesh, pledging to deepen strategic and economic ties between the two nations. The visit highlighted the breadth and depth of the U.S.-Bangladesh relationship, according to a statement from the US Embassy in Dhaka. Gor's meetings included discussions with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, as well as a visit to the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Rahman, Gor discussed bilateral relations, trade, investment, and regional cooperation. The US envoy emphasized that strengthening economic cooperation and the broader partnership with Bangladesh remained a priority for Washington. Prime Minister Rahman sought continued US investment in sectors such as warehousing, soybean, cotton, wheat, and information technology.
Gor assured Bangladesh of Washington's positive engagement through the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and informed the Prime Minister that US investors were keen to organize a US Investors Summit in Bangladesh. He also discussed expanding cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and announced that the US would lower its travel advisory for Bangladesh from Level 3 to Level 2, reflecting growing US confidence in Bangladesh’s security environment.
The US envoy praised Bangladesh for hosting over a million forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals and called for a swift, sustainable, and political solution to the Rohingya crisis. Prime Minister Rahman expressed gratitude for the US's humanitarian assistance, which constitutes more than half of the international aid for the Rohingyas. Gor stressed the need for coordinated efforts involving ASEAN, neighboring countries, and other stakeholders to resolve the crisis.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman described bilateral relations as moving in a 'very positive direction' and expressed keenness to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, migration, and regional affairs. The US Embassy stated that Gor's visit underscored the enduring partnership between the two countries and reaffirmed Washington's commitment to strengthen cooperation with Bangladesh across political, economic, and regional spectrums.
