Man Sentenced to Death for Wife's Murder in Dhaka

A court in Dhaka has sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife in 2017.

A court in Dhaka has convicted a man and sentenced him to death for murdering his wife at their house in Middle Badda in 2017. Judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi of Dhaka 6th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court pronounced the judgment in the presence of the convict, Monir Hossain, and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant.

Monir Hossain and Shakir Khatun Soma got married in 2003 and had a daughter. According to case documents, Monir and his family subjected Soma to physical and mental abuse. He also took Taka 11 lakh from Soma's family under the pretext of starting a business but continued to assault her.

On October 6, 2017, Monir beat Soma and slit her throat with a knife, killing her. Neighbors rushed her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Soma's mother, Akter Banu, filed the case on the same day with Badda Police Station.

Police filed a charge-sheet against Monir on December 7, 2017, and the court framed charges against him on May 17, 2018. Fifteen out of twenty witnesses testified in the case on different hearing dates.
