Rajshahi, known for its cleanliness, greenery, and rich cultural heritage, now boasts a new landmark that adds to its charm. A historic Dhopkol, a manually operated public water pump once used to supply safe drinking water, has been installed at the square in front of the Rajshahi City Bhaban. This restoration has transformed an ordinary road intersection into a popular attraction for visitors.
A Symbol of History and Heritage
The large dome-shaped iron Dhopkol, painted white and enclosed by iron railings, immediately catches the attention of passers-by. Red and blue decorative lights illuminate the structure at night, making the intersection even more attractive. Visitors often take photographs and selfies beside the Dhopkol, appreciating its aesthetic and historical value.
Historical Significance
The Dhopkol carries a rich historical legacy. In 1937, Rajshahi faced a severe shortage of safe drinking water, leading to widespread waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. To address this crisis, the Rajshahi Water Works was established, with significant financial contributions from Rani Hemanta Kumari of the Puthia royal family. The project was named Rani Hemanta Kumari Water Works in her honour.
With the expansion of modern water supply systems over the years, the importance of the Dhopkols gradually declined. Once numbering more than 150 across Rajshahi, only a handful remain today, most no longer functional. The Dhopkol now displayed at the intersection had been lying abandoned beside a graveyard and was at risk of being demolished during road expansion work.
Preservation and Beautification
Instead of being scrapped, the Rajshahi City Corporation relocated the Dhopkol to the intersection as a heritage sculpture. This initiative not only beautifies the area but also serves as a reminder of Rajshahi's rich past, helping future generations learn about the city's history and heritage.
