Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury announced plans to extend the railway line from Dhaka to Jaflong via Sylhet. This initiative is part of a larger effort to transform Jaflong, Tamabil, and surrounding areas into a prominent tourism destination. Alongside the railway, the government will also enhance the road communication network, aiming to improve accessibility and convenience for tourists.
Tourism Development and Infrastructure
During a visit to Jaflong, Minister Choudhury highlighted the challenges faced by tourists, including the lack of a railway connection between Sylhet and Jaflong, inadequate road infrastructure, and insufficient quality accommodation. The proposed 47-kilometre railway line is expected to alleviate these issues, providing better connectivity and enhancing the overall tourist experience.
Feasibility Study and Future Steps
A feasibility study will soon be conducted to assess the project's viability. Once the study is complete, the government will take necessary steps to implement the railway extension. The study will also consider other infrastructure improvements needed to support the region's tourism growth.
High-Level Delegation and Discussions
Minister Choudhury was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Railways Secretary Md Fahimul Islam, Labour and Employment Secretary Md. Abdur Rahman Tarafder, Road Transport and Highways Secretary Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque, and Bangladesh Railway Director General Md. Afzal Hossain. The delegation held discussions with local officials to outline measures for promoting tourism in the area.
