A Chattogram court has sentenced former Sub-postmaster Ehsanul Haque to three years in prison for embezzling Taka 15,83,900 from customers' savings and term deposits while serving at two sub-post offices in Boalkhali upazila. The verdict was delivered by Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman. The court found Ehsanul Haque guilty after reviewing the testimonies of 14 out of 21 prosecution witnesses.

Ehsanul Haque misappropriated funds by accepting savings and term deposits from customers, recording them in the passbook, but failing to enter them in the office's main cash book and journal book. He embezzled Taka 6 lakh 42 thousand at the Shakpura sub-post office and Taka 9 lakh 41 thousand 900 at the Charndwip sub-post office.

The departmental investigation that substantiated the embezzlement allegations was followed by a case registration at the Boalkhali Police Station on July 14, 2016. After the Anti-Corruption Commission's investigation, a charge-sheet was submitted to the court on May 30, 2017, leading to the trial's commencement.

This conviction underscores the commitment to combating financial crimes in Bangladesh, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in public service roles.

The case also serves as a significant reminder of the judiciary's role in upholding justice and ensuring that those entrusted with public funds are held accountable.
