A court in Chattogram has sentenced two individuals, Md. Arif and Md. Maruf, to life imprisonment for their involvement in yaba trafficking. The Fourth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Afroza Jasmine Koli, delivered the verdict. The accused were fined Taka 10,000, with an additional three months in jail if the fine is not paid.

Background of the Case

The case dates back to August 19, 2022, when a temporary checkpoint was set up on the Outer Ring Road near the Muslimabad intersection of Patenga Police Station. Authorities signaled a Super GL microbus to stop, but the occupants attempted to flee. They were subsequently arrested, and a search revealed 9,635 yaba tablets, 15 grams of yaba powder, and the microbus used for transportation.

Legal Proceedings

RAB-7 Police Inspector Md. Zahirul Islam filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act at the Patenga Model Police Station. The evidence presented by six witnesses substantiated the charges, leading to the life sentences for Md. Arif and Md. Maruf.
