Chattogram Mayor Requests JICA's Aid for Enhanced Waste Management

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has requested technical and financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to modernize the city's waste management system.

Chattogram City Corporation (CSC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has sought technical and financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to modernize the city's waste management system, increase collection capacity, and build a cleaner city. During a courtesy meeting with JICA's newly appointed Chief Representative Takahashi Junko at the CSC office in Tiger Pass, the Mayor made this request.

Mayor Hossain expressed gratitude to JICA for their ongoing technical assistance project on waste management, which is set to continue until 2029. This project includes analyzing the current state of CSC's waste management, identifying challenges, creating a comprehensive waste management master plan, implementing waste reduction activities, strengthening waste collection, transportation, and intermediate treatment systems, ensuring safe management of existing dumpsites, preparing for new landfill construction, increasing public awareness about waste reduction through environmental education and awareness campaigns, strengthening medical waste source separation, collection, and treatment systems, collecting waste management data according to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2021, and reporting to the Department of Environment, and exchanging experiences with other cities.

JICA Chief Representative Takahashi Junko informed the Mayor about the progress of various development projects funded by JICA in Chattogram and requested CSC's cooperation for their successful implementation.

The meeting was attended by CSC's Acting Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Mo. Ashraful Amin, Chief Sanitation Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, and JICA representatives Hideki Osawa, Deputy Program Manager Mo. Abdullah Bin Hossain, and National Expert on JICA's Waste Management Project, Golam Sarwar.
