A Ukrainian drone strike has killed one person and wounded another in southern Russia, causing a fire at a major oil refinery. Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that several houses were damaged by falling debris. The attack also resulted in a fire at the Slavyansk-on-Kuban oil refinery, one of the largest in the region, and damaged a power line and gas pipe.
Details of the Attack
Governor Kondratyev stated that the Krasnodar region came under a massive enemy drone attack. He confirmed that one person was killed and another was wounded, receiving immediate assistance on site. The Slavyansk-on-Kuban oil refinery, part of the Slavyansk EKO group, is located near the Crimean peninsula, which has been a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks.
Widespread Drone Interceptions
The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that a total of 213 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in more than a dozen regions of Russia, including Moscow. This indicates a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with Ukraine targeting Russian energy infrastructure in retaliation for similar strikes on its own civilians and infrastructure.
Context of the Conflict
Russia has been conducting near-daily strikes on Ukraine since the launch of its full-scale invasion in February 2022. In response, Ukraine has intensified its efforts to target Russian energy infrastructure, aiming to hinder Moscow's financial capabilities in its war effort. This conflict remains one of the bloodiest in Europe since World War Two.
