The UK is planning to ban social media use for children under 16, along with imposing restrictions on gaming and live-streaming platforms. This move is considered one of the most significant steps globally to regulate online activities for minors. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday (June 15) that significant changes are being made to social media regulations to ensure the mental and physical safety of children online.

Prime Minister Starmer stated, 'It is clear to me that a complete ban is the right decision.' He added that the task would not be easy but the government has the capability to stand against the power of big tech companies.

In recent years, the UK has strengthened its position against tech companies, pressuring them to implement age verification methods, change algorithms, and prevent children from sharing nude images on mobile phones. Awareness about the mental health risks associated with excessive online time for children is also increasing. Starmer's decision to take further action was influenced by discussions with parents and Australia's experience, which banned social media for under-16s last December.

The UK government has consulted teachers, parents, and young people about the new restrictions, discussing options like a complete ban, curfews, time limits on app usage, and disabling addictive design features. Over 116,000 responses were received, with 83% of parents believing the risks of social media outweigh its benefits and 90% supporting a minimum age of 16 for social media use. However, some psychologists and researchers question the effectiveness of this measure, and some students express complex feelings about their relationship with technology.
