Investigators are examining the wreckage of a massive fire at a Bangkok bar that killed at least 28 people and injured more than 70 others. The blaze, which occurred on Sunday evening, is Thailand's worst such incident in nearly two decades. Flames quickly engulfed the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar and restaurant, causing panic and chaos as people fled the scene.

Eyewitness Accounts

Athipat 'Ice' Wijarn, a musician whose bandmates were performing when the fire broke out, described the scene as 'everybody was running, squeezing into each other.' He noticed smoke coming from the circuit board behind the stage before crawling towards the exit, where he was hit by an explosion. The keyboardist and singer of his band both perished in the fire.

Kaew-udon Poungppany recounted his desperate attempts to save his younger brother, Phonepaseut Poungppany, who died in the fire. 'I grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed it at the door... but I couldn't go any further. I heard people screaming,' he said.

Investigation and Initial Findings

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stated that smoke was likely the main cause of death. National police chief Kitrat Panphet noted that most victims were found in the toilets, suggesting panic and a lack of lights contributed to the tragedy. Police are examining the exit doors, electrical wiring, and potential fire-fueling decorations in the 50-year-old building.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and urged everyone to wait for the official findings, warning that 'there will be no leniency if any laws have been broken.' Initial inquiries suggest 'blind spots' without a visible fire escape route.

Community Impact and Previous Incidents

The fire has left a community in mourning, with many families losing loved ones. An elderly woman, Nid, lost her daughter and son-in-law, leaving her to care for their young children. The incident has reignited concerns about Thailand's approach to health and safety regulations in bars and nightclubs.

In 2022, a fire at the Mountain B nightclub in Chonburi province killed 25 people. The government has promised financial support for the victims of Sunday's fire, but for many, like Kanlayawat Banruangthong, 'no amount of money' will ease the pain of loss.

Why This Matters

This tragic incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety regulations and enforcement in public venues. For Bangladesh, where similar concerns exist, this serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of neglecting safety standards. Ensuring proper fire escapes, regular safety audits, and strict adherence to regulations can prevent such disasters.
