Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has sought stronger United Nations (UN) support for expanding the deployment of Bangladeshi peacekeepers and police personnel during separate bilateral meetings with two UN under-secretaries-general in New York. The minister reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to UN peacekeeping and requested support for the early verification of Rapid Deployment Level (RDL) status for Bangladeshi Formed Police Units (FPUs).
Request for Enhanced Deployment
During a meeting with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Minister Salahuddin sought greater deployment of Bangladeshi individual police officers, consideration of deploying a Bangladesh FPU in current or future UN peacekeeping missions, and increased leadership and professional positions for Bangladeshi officers at the UN Headquarters and in field missions. Lacroix highly appreciated Bangladesh's sustained contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and its readiness to provide well-trained and capable police personnel.
Operational Support for Specialized Deployments
In a separate meeting with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare, the home minister discussed operational and logistical support for Bangladesh's planned specialized police deployments to Haiti. The discussions covered contingent-owned equipment, shipment arrangements, and reimbursement-related issues associated with the deployment. Khare praised Bangladesh's significant contributions to UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations and assured the minister of continued operational support for Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
Bangladesh's Commitment to Peacekeeping
Bangladesh has a longstanding history of contributing to UN peacekeeping missions, providing both military and police personnel. The country's peacekeepers have been involved in numerous missions around the world, earning a reputation for their professionalism and effectiveness. The recent requests by Minister Salahuddin Ahmed highlight Bangladesh's continued commitment to global peace and security through its participation in UN peacekeeping efforts.
Why This Matters
The enhanced deployment of Bangladeshi peacekeepers and police personnel is crucial for several reasons. It not only strengthens Bangladesh's role in international peacekeeping but also provides valuable experience and training for its security forces. Additionally, it underscores Bangladesh's active and constructive role in multilateral diplomacy, enhancing its global standing and influence. The support from UN officials for these deployments indicates a recognition of Bangladesh's significant contributions to global peace and security.
