The Kremlin has confirmed it is in talks with Turkey over the potential sale of Ankara's Russian-made S-400 missile systems. This comes amid reports that Turkey plans to offload the systems in exchange for Washington granting access to US-made F-35 fighter jets.
Background on the S-400 deal
NATO member Turkey has been blocked from Washington's F-35 programme since 2019 after receiving its first deliveries of Russian-made S-400 air defence batteries. The United States had explicitly warned Turkey against purchasing the Russian system. Turkey bought the S-400s from Russia in 2017 during a time of frayed relations between Ankara and Washington over the war in Syria and other issues.
Sanctions and strained relations
The move drew criticism from other NATO members and resulted in the United States sanctioning Turkey under its Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), blocking Turkey from procuring US-made F-35s that it had already paid for.
Recent developments
During a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said he "would consider" inviting Turkey back into the F-35 programme. Trump also mentioned potentially taking the sanctions off, citing Turkey's loyalty. Turkey requires Russia's consent to re-sell the S-400s, as it does not have a re-export license.
Kremlin's stance
"We have had contacts with the Turkish side on this matter, and we will continue our contacts with the Turkish side on this issue," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a briefing when asked about the report.
Significance for Bangladesh
This development is significant for Bangladesh as it highlights the complexities of international arms deals and the geopolitical tensions they can create. It also underscores the importance of maintaining balanced relations with major powers. Bangladesh, which has its own defence needs and relationships with both Russia and the United States, must navigate similar challenges in its arms procurement and diplomatic strategies.
