Bangladesh and the Maldives have discussed establishing a direct shipping link to enhance bilateral trade and connectivity. The proposal was explored during a bilateral meeting between Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and his Maldivian counterpart Iruthisham Adam in Malé. The two Foreign Ministers examined ways to further strengthen relations through enhanced cooperation in various sectors including migration, tourism, education, health, blue economy, and maritime connectivity.
Enhanced Cooperation and Connectivity
The proposed direct shipping link is expected to facilitate bilateral trade and improve connectivity between the two South Asian nations. Both sides also discussed the possibility of high-level visits to deepen bilateral engagement. Dr Rahman reaffirmed the government's 'Bangladesh First' foreign policy and emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties. Maldives' State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Fahmy Hassan and Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Dr Md Nazmul Islam were also present at the meeting.

The meeting highlighted the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives and sought to further deepen these ties through enhanced cooperation across multiple sectors. The direct shipping link is seen as a crucial step towards improving trade and connectivity, which are essential for economic growth and regional integration.
