Tens of thousands of Albanians gathered in Tirana on Saturday for the largest protest yet against a luxury resort project linked to US President Donald Trump's family. The 35th consecutive daily protest marks the biggest demonstration since rallies began in late May against the planned construction of a luxury hotel by Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner in a nature reserve on the Albanian coast.
Flamingo Revolution: A Symbol of Public Discontent
The movement against the resort project has been dubbed the 'Flamingo Revolution,' named after the pink birds that migrate to the nature reserve where the project is planned. Protesters argue that the $4.6-billion development poses a risk to the environment and a nearby lagoon critical to migrating birds.
Calls for Prime Minister's Resignation
Opposition to the project has become a flashpoint for frustrations over perceived corruption. Protesters are calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama to step down, accusing him of a lack of transparency. Alketa Ademi, a 40-year-old protester, told AFP, 'What began as the Flamingo Revolution has sparked widespread public discontent. Lack of transparency, arrogance -- enough is enough! The prime minister has to leave.'
Violent Clashes and Police Response
The protests have seen escalating violence. On Thursday, demonstrators gathered outside parliament, leading to clashes with police who used tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannon to disperse the crowd. Fifteen police officers were injured, and 25 demonstrators were detained. The Albanian Helsinki Committee, a leading local rights group, expressed concern about the escalation of the situation and called for an independent investigation into the police's use of force.
Diaspora Joins the Protests
A number of Albanians from the diaspora have returned to Tirana to join the demonstrations. Xheku Shena, an Albanian from Canada, told AFP, 'We are not against foreign investment, we are for dignity, respect, and transparency, and against the current model that is harmful to the public interest.'
Why This Matters
The protests highlight growing public discontent in Albania over issues of transparency, corruption, and environmental protection. The movement has significant implications for the country's political landscape and could influence future policies regarding foreign investment and environmental conservation.
