Alexander Zverev has finally won his first Grand Slam title, triumphing in the French Open men's singles final. The German star defeated Italy's Flavio Cobolli in a five-set marathon that lasted 4 hours and 16 minutes. Zverev, the tournament's second seed, won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-1.
This victory ends a 30-year drought for German men in Grand Slam tennis, with the last German to win a major being Boris Becker at the 1996 Australian Open. Zverev had previously reached three Grand Slam finals, losing each time.
Cobolli, the 10th seed, had the chance to become the first Italian man to win the French Open in 50 years. The 24-year-old had never reached a Grand Slam semifinal before this tournament. He advanced to the final when his semifinal opponent, Matteo Arnaldi, withdrew due to illness.
