The World Cup 2023 has begun with an unprecedented three red cards in the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, setting a concerning tone for the tournament. This marks the first time in World Cup history that three red cards have been issued in the inaugural game.
Previously, the record for the most red cards in an opening match was held by Cameroon, who received two red cards in their 1990 World Cup opener against Argentina. The current tournament, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, now faces the risk of breaking the all-time record for red cards in a single World Cup.
In the Mexico-South Africa match, South African midfielders Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, along with Mexican player César Montes, were shown red cards. South Africa's coach, Hugo Broos, contested Zwane's red card, arguing it was unjust. The referee, Wilton Sampaio, issued all three red cards directly, a rare occurrence in World Cup history.
