Montreal, known for its sports enthusiasm, prioritized its financial stability and traditions over FIFA's attractive offer. The city's past experience with the 1976 Olympics, which left it in debt for decades, influenced its decision. Additionally, FIFA's demands, such as installing new lifts and controlling public spaces, were deemed too burdensome.
Similarly, Chicago and Minneapolis rejected FIFA's proposal due to economic uncertainties and inflexible requirements. Minneapolis, which hosted the Super Bowl in 2018, found corporate sponsors unwilling to cover the increased costs for the World Cup. Chicago's mayor, Rahm Emanuel, refused to risk taxpayer money on the event.
The decision to decline hosting has allowed these cities to focus on other events. Montreal is celebrating its Jazz Festival and the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympics. Minneapolis is hosting WWE Summer Slam and Special Olympics, while Chicago is filling its stadiums with concerts by global stars like Ed Sheeran.
