India built a strong foundation in the first innings of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Chandigarh, reaching 368 runs for the loss of three wickets on the first day. Centuries were scored by Lokesh Rahul and Shubman Gill.
Rahul scored 100 runs before being dismissed, while captain Gill remained unbeaten on 103. Rishabh Pant was also unbeaten on 50.
Yashsvi Jaiswal was the only Indian batsman who could not hold his ground, being dismissed for 24 runs. Rahul and Sai Sudharsan put on a 139-run partnership for the second wicket. Sudharsan scored 81 runs before being caught behind by Mohammad Salim. Rahul was dismissed by Ziaur Rahman shortly after reaching his century.
Gill and Pant then combined for an unbroken 121-run partnership. Gill's century was his sixth as captain, placing him fifth among Indian captains in terms of centuries scored (highest is Virat Kohli with 20).
