Christmas in Old Dhaka: Celebrations Marked by Cake, Gifts, and Prayers

In the ancient churches of Sadarghat area in Old Dhaka, Christians are celebrating Christmas with various activities including taking pictures, cutting cakes, distributing gifts, and prayers.

The churches, such as the Holy Cross Church in Lakshmibazar, Sadarghat Baptist Church, Armenian Church in Armanitola, and St. Thomas Church in Shankhari Bazar, are bustling with devotees. Fresh statues of infant Jesus, Mary, and adult Jesus are displayed, and Christians are offering their respects.

Father Donnell Cruz of the Holy Cross Church in Lakshmibazar emphasized the importance of standing together in support and brotherhood, especially for the poor and distressed. Eva Lucy Marak, a teacher at St. Francis High School, highlighted the significance of Jesus's birthday as a day of liberation, welfare, and equality. She also mentioned the tradition of cooking special meals and inviting people of other faiths to join in the celebration.
