Andy Burnham will become the UK's next prime minister after being confirmed as the leader of the Labour Party at a special conference on Friday. Burnham, who has vowed to take Britain on a 'new path', replaces Keir Starmer, who resigned last month following political turmoil and scandal. With Labour retaining a majority in parliament, Burnham's leadership is set without new elections.

Burnham, previously the mayor of Greater Manchester, returned to parliament after a nine-year absence. He secured the leadership uncontested, gaining the backing of 379 of Labour's 403 MPs. His key policy is devolving powers to cities to stimulate the economy, including establishing a 'No. 10 North' office.

In his speech, Burnham criticized the centralization of political and economic power in the 1980s and pledged to make the economy work for all regions. He advocates for more public control of services and reindustrialisation. Labour MPs hope he will better communicate with the public and take a more radical approach to reforming public services.

Challenges ahead for Burnham include a tepid economy, high government borrowing costs, and irregular migration. He has vowed to adhere to Labour's 2024 election manifesto by not raising main taxes, but will need to address a £4.7-billion gap in the defence investment plan and navigate welfare reform.

Burnham's rise to leadership follows Starmer's turbulent premiership, marked by policy missteps and controversies. Labour's victory in the 2024 elections ended 14 years of Conservative rule, but Starmer's tenure was short-lived due to mounting pressures and electoral setbacks.
