Shafiqur Rahman, Leader of the Opposition, today called for building a corruption-free Bangladesh, paying tribute to all martyrs, freedom fighters, and those injured or permanently disabled in significant events in the country’s history. Delivering his closing speech at the budget session of the Jatiya Sangsad, he praised the Prime Minister, the Speaker, and the Parliament Secretariat for their parliamentary proceedings. Dr. Shafiqur expressed hope that the House would reflect the people’s aspirations, enhancing their confidence in nation-building. He urged the government to strengthen relief programs for flood and landslide victims and consider special financial assistance for affected families.

Addressing Key National Issues

Highlighting the need to resolve waterlogging in Dhaka, Dr. Shafiqur stressed the importance of adopting a long-term and coordinated plan to transform the capital into a clean, livable, and modern city through planned development. He welcomed the increased allocation for the education sector but underscored the need to give greater priority to primary, technical, and value-based education. Dr. Shafiqur also called for bringing qualified educational institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme through a transparent selection process.

Combating Corruption

Dr. Shafiqur emphasized the need to restore discipline in the economy and take a firm stance against corruption, calling for collective efforts from the government, administration, business community, and political leaders. He praised the Prime Minister’s anti-corruption stance and expressed hope for more effective measures to tackle the problem.

Preserving Historical Memory

Welcoming the government’s initiatives to preserve the memory of the July Mass Uprising, Dr. Shafiqur said the decision to inaugurate the July Memorial Museum on August 5 would fulfill a long-standing expectation of the people. He also described the move to strengthen the activities of the July Memorial Foundation as a positive initiative and called for preserving comprehensive records of the martyrs and the injured for future generations.
