The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a significant initiative aimed at engaging Bangladeshi academics and researchers working abroad, as well as international scholars, in the teaching and research activities of the country's universities. This initiative, part of the UGC's digital transformation efforts, will be implemented over the next two years through a virtual platform.
Objective and Implementation
UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed revealed the plan during a discussion titled 'BdREN-Cambridge University Press Collaboration: Pathways Towards Global Knowledge' held in Dhaka. The primary goal of this digital transformation is to ensure equal access to quality education and research opportunities for students across all universities in Bangladesh. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the UGC, the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN), and the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project.
Under this program, all 180 universities in the country will be integrated into a unified digital ecosystem. Over the next two years, these institutions will be equipped with high-speed internet, campus-wide free Wi-Fi, smart classrooms, digital libraries, and expanded access to international research databases and electronic resources. This will help reduce learning gaps and ensure equal opportunities in higher education.
Long-term Impact and Collaboration
Dr. Ahmed emphasized that a sustainable institutional framework will be established to continue these services even after the project's completion. He expressed hope that this initiative would enable newer and remote universities to access world-class electronic resources, while faculty members at established universities would be able to strengthen academic collaboration through online platforms. This move is expected to enhance the quality of education and research in Bangladesh by leveraging global expertise and resources.
