Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today informed the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that the government is implementing multi-faceted initiatives to revolutionize agriculture into a technology-driven, sustainable sector. The Prime Minister highlighted various measures aimed at modernizing the agricultural system, including the digitalization of farming practices, the introduction of modern technologies, and the promotion of climate-resilient practices.

Digitalization and Modernization Efforts

The government is working to digitalize and modernize agriculture by expanding the use of digital technologies in agricultural management. Initiatives include farmer registration, the creation of a farmers' database, digital agricultural services, mobile-based weather information, market information, agricultural advisory services, expanded e-extension services, and online platforms for agricultural services. The distribution of the Farmer Card is also underway to ensure direct delivery of government services to farmers.

Agricultural Mechanization and Technology Integration

To reduce production costs, address labor shortages, and increase profitability, the government is expanding agricultural mechanization. Modern information technologies such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), drone technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite data, and big data are being integrated to modernize the sector. These technologies aim to make crop health and yield monitoring, disease detection, precision fertilizer and irrigation management, and production planning more effective and science-based.

Promotion of Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Practices

The government is promoting the use of organic fertilizers, biofertilizers, and environmentally friendly agricultural technologies to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. Efforts are also being made to transform agriculture into a climate-smart and climate-resilient sector to address the impacts of climate change. Farmers are being provided with advice on suitable crops, fertilizer requirements, and weather forecasts.

Significance and Future Outlook

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized that these initiatives will make agriculture more productive, profitable, export-oriented, and sustainable, thereby contributing significantly to national economic development and food security. The transformation of the agricultural sector is expected to enhance the livelihoods of farmers, ensure balanced and nutritious food production, and strengthen the country's resilience to climate change.
