The Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) has commenced drilling a new gas well at Barocharigaon in Shenbagh upazila, Noakhali. The state-owned company anticipates adding seven million cubic-feet of gas to the national grid from this new exploration. The drilling, under the 'Sundalpur-4 Evaluation and Development Well Excavation Project,' is expected to continue for 45 days.

Project Details and Expectations

The drilling operation aims to reach a target depth of 1,550 meters, with natural gas expected to be discovered in two separate zones. Zakir Hossain, the drilling in-charge, stated that the total gas reserve will be determined after the 45-day drilling period concludes.

Historical Context and Previous Explorations

Petrobangla's initial gas exploration in Noakhali's Begumganj Upazila began in 1976, followed by a second attempt in 1978, both of which were unsuccessful. In 2013, the third gas well was drilled, yielding around eight million cubic feet of gas after maintenance in 2018. BAPEX has also drilled three gas wells named Sundalpur-1, Sundalpur-2, and Sundalpur-3, with gas production from Sundalpur-1 and 3 currently suspended, while Sundalpur-2 continues to supply gas to the national grid.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

The successful exploration and addition of new gas reserves are crucial for Bangladesh's energy security and economic stability. Increased gas supply will help meet the growing energy demands and reduce dependency on imported fuels.
