In the bustling market of Gaurinathpur village, Maheshpur upazila, Jhenaidah, Abu Sayeed Sarker stands out as a symbol of entrepreneurial success. Leaving behind a well-paid position at a non-governmental organization, Sayeed took a leap of faith into agriculture. Today, he is a successful dragon fruit farmer and entrepreneur, supplying markets across Bangladesh and exporting overseas.
Sayeed's journey began in 2021 when he resigned from his job to cultivate dragon fruit on one-and-a-half bighas of family land. Despite facing financial losses and criticism, his determination paid off. He expanded his venture by producing seedlings and personally transporting them to various districts. In late 2022, he opened Ayan Fruit Bhandar, a wholesale outlet that now handles 1,500 to 2,000 kilograms of dragon fruit daily.
Sayeed's success story is a testament to the potential of entrepreneurship. He believes that unemployment can be overcome through small business ventures. His orchards and wholesale business now employ many locals, contributing to the community's economic growth.
