SpaceX reported a 92 percent surge in revenue for the second quarter, surpassing analyst expectations by around $1 billion in its first post-IPO earnings report. However, shares tumbled as investors remained skeptical about the company's ability to deliver on its ambitious promises.

Revenue Growth and Heavy Spending

The company attributed its strong performance to AI computing deals and the growth of its Starlink satellite internet service, which now has 12 million subscribers. However, SpaceX also continued to spend heavily, with capital expenditures exceeding $18 billion in the three months ending in June. More than 86 percent of this spending went to its AI division.

Starlink and AI Contributions

Starlink, the satellite connectivity service, grew to 12 million subscribers, doubling from a year earlier. It accounted for just over half of SpaceX's revenue and was the only segment not losing money. The AI segment tripled to $2.6 billion in revenue but posted a $1.3 billion operating loss.

Investor Skepticism and Future Prospects

Despite the strong revenue growth, SpaceX shares dropped more than 8 percent during after-hours trading. Investors remain skeptical, with Emarketer Senior Analyst Gadjo Sevilla noting that investors want to see immediate value rather than long-term promises. Uncertainty will persist until a lockup period expires, allowing more SpaceX employees to sell their shares.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

SpaceX's growth in AI and satellite internet services could have significant implications for Bangladesh, particularly in enhancing connectivity and access to advanced technologies. Improved satellite internet services could bridge the digital divide in remote areas, fostering economic growth and innovation.
