The committee considered proposals from various ministries, including the Ministry of Food, Ministry of Agriculture, Road Transport and Highways Division, and Energy and Mineral Resources Division.

Details of the Wheat Import Approvals

The first involves the procurement of 50,000 MT of wheat under Package-3 for the 2025-26 fiscal year through an international open tender. The wheat will be supplied by M/S Agrocorp International Pte. Ltd., Singapore, at a unit price of US$297.92 per metric ton, with the total procurement cost estimated at Taka 182.84 crore.

In a separate decision, the committee approved the import of 2.20 lakh MT of wheat from the United States under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement. The wheat will be procured at a unit price of US$322 per metric ton, with the total procurement cost estimated at Taka 869.56 crore.

Significance and Implications

The import of 2.70 lakh MTs of wheat is crucial for maintaining an adequate supply of the staple grain in Bangladesh. This move is expected to help stabilize wheat prices and ensure food security for the population. The procurement through both international tender and G2G agreement demonstrates the government's commitment to securing essential food supplies through diverse sourcing methods.

What Happens Next

Following the CCGP's approval, the Ministry of Food will proceed with the procurement process.
