State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam announced that water tanks will be distributed among coastal households in phases. The initiative aims to help conserve rainwater and ensure safe drinking water in the region. Faridul made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a water tank distribution programme in Rampal Upazila, Bagerhat.
Addressing the Drinking Water Crisis
The state minister highlighted that people in coastal Rampal and Mongla areas have been facing an acute drinking water crisis for a long time. To address this, 3,000 water tanks are being distributed initially under the Climate Trust Fund. As part of this initiative, 82 tanks were handed over today.
Faridul explained that most water sources in the coastal region are saline, and water from many tube wells is unsuitable for use. "Conserving rainwater is one of the most effective ways to provide safe drinking water, and that is why water tanks are being provided to families," he added.
Government Ponds as Freshwater Reservoirs
In addition to water tanks, the government plans to excavate, renovate, and develop government ponds as freshwater reservoirs. Faridul emphasized that fish farming will not be allowed in these ponds to ensure they remain sources of safe drinking water.
The state minister assured that the government is working on a permanent solution to ensure safe water supply for coastal people. He also mentioned that various projects are being implemented to improve the quality of life of coastal communities and tackle the impacts of climate change.
