In an effort to tackle the drinking water crisis in Bangladesh's coastal regions, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam announced that water tanks will be delivered to every household in phases. The initiative aims to save rainwater and provide a sustainable solution for safe drinking water. Simultaneously, government ponds will be renovated and developed into freshwater reservoirs.

Initiative Details

Speaking at an event organized by The Climate Trust Fund in Bagerhat, Dr Faridul Islam highlighted the immediate distribution of 3,000 water tanks under the Rainwater Harvesting Programme. An additional 82 tanks were distributed today in Rampal Upazila. The state minister emphasized the government's commitment to a permanent solution for safe water access in coastal areas.

Long-term Solutions

Dr Faridul Islam noted that government ponds will be renovated and designated as reserved freshwater reservoirs. Fish farming will be prohibited in these ponds to ensure the availability of safe drinking water for the local population. The state minister's announcement reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the long-standing water shortage issues in coastal Rampal and Mongla areas.
