Police headquarters (PHQ) has issued an alert urging people to be cautious against a recent trend of cheating using social media, particularly to extort money and influence official matters. The PHQ noted several complaints of fraudsters seeking money and making various recommendations or requests in the names of police officers, using their photographs as well. Anybody who received such messages is advised to call the national emergency services at 999 and contact the CID’s cyber police centre, Detective Branch, or Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The PHQ emphasized that photographs of government officials on social media do not ensure the mobile number belongs to that particular official. It also condemned the activities of fraudsters for damaging the reputation of government organizations and officials, promising due legal actions against such fraudulent activities.
The alert comes as a response to growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms for fraudulent activities. Scammers have been impersonating police officers and other government officials, using their photographs to gain trust and extort money from unsuspecting victims. These scams often involve requests for money or recommendations under false pretenses.
In their statement, the PHQ highlighted the importance of public awareness and vigilance. They stressed that anyone receiving suspicious messages should immediately report them to the appropriate authorities. The national emergency service at 999, the CID’s cyber police centre, the Detective Branch, and the DMP are all available to assist victims and track down perpetrators.
The police also warned that the presence of an official’s photograph on social media does not guarantee the legitimacy of the associated mobile number. This is a common tactic used by fraudsters to appear more credible. The PHQ urged the public not to engage with such messages and to verify the authenticity of any requests through official channels.
Furthermore, the PHQ condemned the fraudulent activities for tarnishing the reputation of government organizations and officials. They assured the public that legal actions would be taken against those involved in such scams. The police are committed to combating these fraudulent practices and protecting the public from falling victim to these schemes.
