Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting on two waste-to-energy projects to be implemented in Dhaka City. The meeting took place at the conference room of the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat. The projects aim to address waste management and generate electricity by processing waste.
Aminbazar Project Details
One of the projects will be constructed at Aminbazar under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). China's CMEC Group will invest in this project, which is expected to generate 42.5 megawatts of electricity by processing approximately 3,000 tonnes of waste daily. The project is slated to begin supplying electricity to the national grid by August 2028 and will have a lifespan of 25 years.
Matuail Project Details
The second project will be implemented at Matuail under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) by South Korea's B&F Company. This project will produce around 15,000 tonnes of methane gas annually from waste, generating approximately 81,000 megawatt-hours of electricity each year, equivalent to about 221 megawatt-hours per day. The project will also produce solar power, fertilizer, animal feed, and eco-bricks, processing approximately 3,000 to 3,500 tonnes of waste daily.
Significance and Environmental Impact
The meeting highlighted that these projects will significantly contribute to improving waste management, addressing climate change, and mitigating global warming. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized the importance of completing both projects within the stipulated timeframe and ensuring the use of environmentally friendly technologies.
Next Steps
To expedite the implementation of these projects, the Prime Minister directed an inter-ministerial meeting involving the ministries of local government, power, and environment. Key officials, including LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, DNCC and DSCC Administrators, and the Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, attended the meeting.
