In an effort to enhance water-based transportation and ease urban mobility, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the concerned authorities to restore the waterways surrounding Dhaka. During a meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Rahman emphasized the need to prevent river pollution, improve the capital's drainage system, and ensure the navigability of waterways.
Rahman's directives include taking effective measures to maintain clean rivers and ensuring that the waterways are operational again. The meeting also deliberated on allowing private companies to operate water buses on the water routes, aiming to diversify transportation options and boost efficiency.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of environmental protection by directing the planting of various tree species along the riverbanks. This initiative is expected to enhance the scenic beauty of the rivers while contributing to ecological preservation.
The meeting was attended by key officials including Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, and the Mayors of Dhaka south and north city corporations, Abdus Salam and Shafiqul Islam Khan.
Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman and senior officials from relevant ministries and agencies were also present. The collective goal is to restore the waterways, improve urban mobility, and create a more sustainable environment for Dhaka's residents.
Rahman's comprehensive approach aims to address both the practical and aesthetic aspects of urban water management, marking a significant step towards a more integrated and efficient urban infrastructure.
