A Dhaka court has convicted and sentenced three men to life imprisonment in a case filed over the gang rape of a girl in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka in 2002. The three convicts are Sujon, Julhash, and Mahammad. Judge Munshi Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict. The court fined each of the three convicts Taka 100,000, with an additional one-year imprisonment in default of payment. One of the convicts, Julhash, remains at large, and an arrest warrant has been issued against him.
Incident Details
According to the case documents, on the night of March 22, 2002, the three men abducted the victim after she stepped out of her house. They took her to a nearby paddy field in the Gorbakanda area of Nawabganj, where they gang-raped her and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
Legal Proceedings
The victim filed the case with Nawabganj Police Station, and the police filed a charge-sheet against the three on July 18, 2002. The court later indicted the trio, initiating the trial officially. The court came up with the judgment after examining a total of seven witnesses on different hearing dates.
Sentencing and Fines
Each of the three convicts was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Taka 100,000. In default of payment, they face an additional one-year imprisonment. The convicts Sujon and Mahammad were sent back to jail with conviction warrants, while an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive convict Julhash.
