The district administration in Narsingdi has recovered two drum trucks and one payloader belonging to Madhabdi Municipality during a raid conducted at Chattogram Engineering Motor Works garage near Itakhola intersection of Shibpur upazila. The raid, led by Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md. Khalid Hossain Shimul, followed a tip-off.
Vehicles Identified as Municipal Property
No registration number plates were found on the recovered vehicles. However, Madhabdi Municipality employees Bazlu, Hasan, Kamal, Al-Amin, and Shahid identified the vehicles as municipal property. The owner of the garage, Tajul Islam, also confirmed the claim.
Garage Owner's Admission
During interrogation, Tajul Islam admitted that four drum trucks and one payloader of Madhabdi Municipality had been brought to his garage for repair long before August 5, 2024. Of those, two drum trucks were repaired and handed over to the then mayor before August 5, 2024, while the remaining two drum trucks and one payloader had been kept at the garage ever since.
He also admitted that after August 5, 2024, he did not communicate with the municipal authorities regarding the remaining vehicles, describing it as an unintended mistake on his part.
Handover to Municipality
The administration has handed over the recovered vehicles to Madhabdi Municipality. This recovery highlights the importance of proper communication and record-keeping between municipal authorities and service providers.
Significance and Implications
This incident underscores the need for better oversight and accountability in municipal asset management. Ensuring that all municipal vehicles are properly registered, maintained, and accounted for is crucial for efficient service delivery and transparency. The recovery of these vehicles will likely prompt a review of current practices and possibly lead to stricter regulations and monitoring mechanisms.
