Freedom Fighter Moni Named Khulna WASA Chairman

Former Khulna City Corporation mayor and freedom fighter Mohammad Moniruzzaman Moni has been appointed chairman of the Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (KWASA) for a three-year term.

Former Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayor and freedom fighter Mohammad Moniruzzaman Moni has been appointed chairman of the Khulna Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (KWASA) for a three-year term. The appointment was announced in a notification issued today by the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. According to the notification, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Shakila Parvin, Moniruzzaman has been appointed under Section 7(1) of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2026. The order takes immediate effect in the public interest.

Background and Career

A resident of Haji Mohsin Road in Khulna city, Moniruzzaman began his political career as an elected commissioner of Ward No. 29 of the KCC in 1994. Later, he served as acting mayor on four terms. He was elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation by a landslide victory in 2013. In November of the same year, a charge-sheet was submitted against him in a case filed over allegations of attacking police and acts of sabotage. Subsequently, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives suspended him temporarily through a notification issued on November 2, 2015.
