Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju has vowed to implement long-term measures to ease waterlogging in the city. After inspecting several waterlogged areas following heavy rainfall, Manju directed officials to identify and remove obstacles hindering rainwater drainage.
Inspection and Directions
During his visit, Manju inspected areas such as Nayabati, the front of the BGB office and the CSD warehouse, Bastuhara Dighi intersection, Daulatpur Pabla Keshab Lal Road, sluice gates in Wards 30 and 31, and the Narkelbaria, Khetrakhali and Matiakhali canals in neighbouring Batiaghata. He instructed authorities to identify the causes of waterlogging and remove barriers to improve drainage.
Long-Term Solutions
"We are trying to determine where water is getting trapped and causing waterlogging. The identified problems will be resolved before the next monsoon through necessary measures," Manju said. He also mentioned that ongoing drainage infrastructure projects had temporarily disrupted water flow in some areas and assured that steps would be taken to complete the works as quickly as possible.
Canal Excavation Programme
In response to journalists, the KCC administrator said the city corporation also plans to excavate several canals around the city under the Prime Minister's canal excavation programme to strengthen the drainage network and reduce waterlogging. KCC Chief Engineer Moshiuzzaman Khan was present during the visit.
Significance and Next Steps
Waterlogging is a recurring problem in Khulna, especially during the monsoon season, causing significant disruptions to daily life and economic activities. The KCC's commitment to long-term solutions is crucial for mitigating these issues. The planned canal excavation and infrastructure improvements are expected to enhance the city's drainage system, providing relief to residents and reducing the impact of future heavy rains.
