Ugochi Daniels, the Deputy Director General (Operations) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), touched down in Dhaka today for a four-day visit. Daniels aims to strengthen cooperation on migration governance, labor migration, and humanitarian concerns during her stay in Bangladesh. Her visit coincides with the launch of Bangladesh's National Action Plan 2026-2030, part of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Daniels was welcomed by IOM Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Iori Kato, the United Nations Interim Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Carol Flore-Smereczniak, and IOM Bangladesh Chief of Mission Dr. Laura Tom Bond. Over the next few days, Daniels is set to engage with senior government officials, UN representatives, development partners, and communities supported by the IOM.
Her itinerary includes a series of meetings focused on migration governance, climate-induced human mobility, labor migration, and humanitarian assistance. Daniels will also travel to Cox's Bazar and Madaripur districts to better understand the challenges faced by these communities.
This visit underscores the continued partnership between Bangladesh and the IOM in promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration. It also highlights the importance of addressing emerging migration and displacement challenges.
The IOM has been working closely with Bangladesh for years, providing support in areas such as refugee assistance, migration management, and capacity building. Daniels' visit aims to build on these efforts and ensure continued collaboration to tackle future challenges.
