In a significant operation, the Fisheries Department of Hathazari upazila seized 6,500 meters of illegal nets and 12 fishing rods from the Halda River. The raid, which took place from 8 pm to 11 pm, covered the area from Kholifagona to Chipatali in the Haladar estuary of the Nazirhat Halda River in Hathazari upazila. The confiscated nets have been stored at a temporary naval police camp along the Halda River and are scheduled to be destroyed at a later date.
Md. Shoukat Ali, the senior upazila fisheries officer of Hathazari, confirmed the seizure. He emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and operations to safeguard the natural breeding grounds of carp fish in the Halda River, which also supports dolphins and a diverse range of aquatic life at the Fisheries Heritage site.
The Halda River is renowned as the only natural fish breeding ground in South Asia. Its protection is crucial not only for the preservation of fish species but also for the ecosystem that supports dolphins and various aquatic life. The operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat illegal fishing activities that threaten this vital natural resource.
