In a significant move to enhance the efficiency and public trust in law enforcement, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed reaffirmed the government's commitment to enforcing a strict reward and punishment policy. Speaking at a ceremony in the Home Ministry's conference room, Ahmed highlighted that police personnel who exhibit honesty, courage, and patriotism will be duly recognized and rewarded, while those who violate laws and regulations will face strict administrative and legal action.
The ceremony saw the presentation of certificates of recognition and financial rewards to nine police personnel for their acts of bravery and outstanding service. Seven officers were honored for recovering a migrant worker's lost passport and important documents within 30 minutes, a collaborative effort between the National Emergency Service 999 and Dhaka Railway Police Station. Additionally, two traffic sergeants were recognized for arresting a snatcher.
Addressing reporters after the ceremony, Ahmed clarified that there was no evidence to suggest that an improvised explosive device (IED) found beneath Motijheel Metro Rail Station was targeted at any specific event, calling the timing coincidental. He assured that the DMP Bomb Disposal Unit had successfully neutralized the device and an investigation was ongoing.
On the topic of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation and security arrangements, Ahmed confirmed that the resignation letter had been submitted and accepted in accordance with constitutional provisions. He emphasized that the former president would continue to enjoy constitutional immunity for actions taken during his tenure and would receive full security through a coordinated effort involving the Special Security Force (SSF), the President's Guard Regiment (PGR), and the police.
Regarding the absence of a police medal ceremony during this year's Police Week, Ahmed explained that technical errors and irregularities had been detected in the preliminary list, which was prepared in haste. The list is currently being re-examined, and medals will be awarded to deserving officers once the verification process is complete.
