Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain today underscored the importance of preserving the spirit of Bangladesh's Liberation War among the younger generation, warning that the true values of the nation's independence would gradually fade if this spirit is not maintained.
Addressing a memorial meeting for Bir Muktijoddha Prof Dr Md Abdul Quddus at Shaheed Dr Milon Hall of Bangladesh Medical University, the minister highlighted the immense suffering endured during the 1971 war. He noted that without the Liberation War and the declaration of independence by Shaheed Ziaur Rahman, Bangladesh would not exist as it does today.
Sakhawat Husain recounted the atrocities committed during the war, particularly in Hindu-majority villages, where widespread devastation, arson, and brutal torture of civilians occurred. He also referred to the horrific incidents of violence against women, many of whom were brutally killed and their bodies left beside railway tracks.
The memorial meeting, held in honor of Prof Dr Md Abdul Quddus, a member of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council and a teacher at Bangladesh Medical University, saw Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain as the chief guest. The event was chaired by Prof Dr Md Saiful Islam, Chairman of the Department of Urology at the university.
The minister's remarks come at a time when there is a growing need to educate the youth about the sacrifices made during the Liberation War and the importance of maintaining its spirit to ensure the nation's continued progress and unity.
