Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, today said the glorious role of the East Bengal Regiment in the 1971 Liberation War remains an inseparable chapter of the nation’s history. He stressed that the sacrifice and valor of the regiment in defending the country’s independence and sovereignty must be presented to future generations and should remain above politics.
Addressing the Nation
The Speaker made these remarks while addressing a programme titled “The Role of the East Bengal Regiment in the Liberation War” as the chief guest held at the Retired Armed Forces Officers Welfare Association (RAOWA) Club in the capital’s Mohakhali. He highlighted the unwavering commitment of every soldier of the East Bengal Regiment to sacrifice their lives, if necessary, for the protection of the country’s independence and sovereignty.
Liberation War Contributions
Referring to the Liberation War, the Speaker noted that Sylhet was the only district headquarters among the country’s 18 districts that was liberated solely through the efforts of the freedom fighters. He emphasized that the 1st Battalion of the East Bengal Regiment played a crucial role in this operation. He recalled leading two companies during the operation conducted in the MC College area on December 15, 1971, and paid tribute to Major Ziauddin, a valiant officer who never compromised on the issues of independence and sovereignty.
Challenging Perceptions
The Speaker also addressed the misconception held by the Pakistanis that Bengalis were “not a martial race”, which was proven wrong through the Liberation War of 1971. He described the armed forces as servants of the people rather than their masters, noting their support during natural disasters and national crises since independence.
Call for Recognition
Despite the significant contributions of the East Bengal Regiment, the Speaker observed that their sacrifices have not yet received due recognition. He expressed hope that the bravery of these soldiers would one day be properly evaluated in the country’s history. The audience responded unanimously in acknowledgment of the regiment’s contribution, prompting the Speaker to thank them.
