In a significant operation, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intercepted and seized nearly seven kilograms of gold, valued at approximately Tk 13.33 crore, at the Darshana border in Chuadanga. The arrest of a suspected smuggler was made during an intelligence-led operation.

Details of the Operation

Following intelligence reports about the smuggling of a large consignment of gold into India through the Darshana border, the Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB) took action. A special team was deployed at 4:20 pm under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Hasan.

The team intercepted a motorcycle rider heading towards Border Pillar 78 and detained him. A thorough search of the suspect, identified as Rabiul Islam, 34, from Chhoygharia village in Darshana, led to the discovery of 39 gold bars of various sizes.

The seized gold weighed 6.968 kilograms and had an estimated market value of Tk 13.33 crore. Along with the gold, BGB also confiscated a motorcycle, a mobile phone, and Tk 140 in cash from the suspect's possession.

Significance and Impact

This operation underscores the vigilance and effectiveness of BGB in curbing illegal smuggling activities. The interception of such a significant amount of gold not only prevents the loss of national revenue but also helps in maintaining the economic stability of the country.

Gold smuggling has been a persistent issue along the borders, and this operation highlights the importance of intelligence-based actions in thwarting such activities. The BGB's proactive measures have likely deterred further attempts at smuggling valuable commodities.
