The council reviewed existing difficulties, including the procurement of transit and crew change visas, which have hindered recruitment and job opportunities, impacting foreign currency earnings.
The meeting called for strengthened inter-ministerial coordination and diplomatic efforts with affected countries, potentially through a dedicated committee. The council also discussed measures to ensure the smooth movement of seafarers, including diplomatic channels via the Bangladesh Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai. Additionally, the council reviewed preparations for international maritime audits and the implementation of global maritime conventions.
The council underscored the importance of a comprehensive National Maritime Policy to enhance maritime security, promote the blue economy, and ensure sustainable development. By resolving these visa issues, Bangladesh aims to secure better employment opportunities for its seafarers and boost its maritime sector's contribution to the economy.
Attendees included State Minister for Shipping and Bridges Md Rajib Ahsan, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and maritime industry stakeholders. The council acknowledged the significant role of seafarers in the nation's economy and pledged to address their challenges to maintain Bangladesh's status as a major supplier of seafarers globally.
