US President Donald Trump has asserted that Venezuela is not yet prepared to hold elections, more than seven months after the American military operation that removed former leader Nicolas Maduro from power. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump acknowledged the progress made but emphasized the need for caution. 'As far as the elections in Venezuela, they're not really ready for them yet, but boy, a lot of progress has been made,' he remarked.
Trump praised Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, who was Maduro's deputy and has been allowed to stay in power by Washington. 'She's doing a fantastic job,' he said. Trump stressed the importance of conducting elections correctly, stating, 'We have to do it right. Elections take care of themselves.'
The US President pivoted to discussing Venezuela's oil industry, highlighting the significant amount of oil being exported and the benefits to the US. 'I'm very popular in Venezuela because we're bringing tremendous economics back to the country, and they were absolutely dying,' Trump added.
Trump's comments come amid ongoing concerns about the readiness of Venezuela for democratic processes. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously stated that Venezuela needs a free press and a new electoral commission before elections can be held. The controversial 2024 presidential elections, which returned Maduro to power, were not recognized by the United States, the European Union, and several Latin American countries.
Maduro is set to go on trial in the United States next year, further complicating the political landscape in Venezuela. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with many questioning the timing and fairness of future elections in the country.
