US President Donald Trump has reiterated his threat to seize Iran's Kharg Island, a vital oil hub. In a post on his social media platform 'Truth Social,' Trump stated, 'Not too far away—we will take over Kharg Island and other oil infrastructure. We will take complete control of their oil and gas markets, like we did in Venezuela.'
Kharg Island, located off the coast of Iran, is a small landmass about five miles long, roughly one-third the size of Manhattan. It plays a crucial role in Iran's oil supply, handling nearly 90% of the country's crude oil exports. The island's deepwater jetties allow large oil tankers to dock easily, making it a key location for oil distribution.
The US has previously attacked the island multiple times. However, regional mediators are currently pushing for dialogue to avoid further conflict, making Trump's latest comments particularly provocative. Iran has responded by enhancing its defenses on the island, deploying additional military personnel and air defense systems.
