Peru and Venezuela have decided to resume diplomatic relations, both foreign ministries announced on Friday. The decision comes after the ties were severed in 2024 over the disputed election win of then-Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The restoration of relations follows the ousting of Maduro and the installation of interim president Delcy Rodriguez, an ally of the United States.
The severance of ties occurred in July 2024 when Venezuela cut bilateral relations after Peru recognized the opposition leader as the election winner, contrary to the conclusion of Venezuelan electoral authorities. The gradual resumption of relations was confirmed in a joint statement by both governments.
Interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez emphasized the importance of engaging in international relations through "Bolivarian diplomacy for peace" during a military ceremony on Friday. The announcement precedes the inauguration of Peru's conservative president-elect Keiko Fujimori on July 28.
Peru, the second-largest recipient of Venezuelan migrants after Colombia, hosts more than 1.6 million Venezuelans. The restoration of diplomatic ties is expected to have significant implications for the management of this migrant population.
