A Nepali Sherpa guide, Dawa Sherpa, who went missing on Mount Everest six days ago, was miraculously rescued alive. Initially presumed dead, Dawa was found by a cleaning team near the Khumbu Icefall and brought down to safety. He was then airlifted to Kathmandu's HAMS Hospital where his family awaited him.
Dawa's wife, Damu Sherpa, and daughter, Mendo Lamu Sherpa, had begun funeral rites after receiving news of his presumed death. They were shocked and overjoyed when they learned he was alive and being rescued.
Dawa was last seen descending the mountain on May 29. Despite a delayed rescue effort, he was found alive by members of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, who were cleaning up after the climbing season.
