A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the southwestern region of Kumamoto prefecture in Japan, resulting in at least 13 deaths and leaving many trapped in the wreckage of collapsed buildings. Rescuers are working tirelessly to reach survivors as the full extent of the damage becomes clear.
Widespread Destruction and Casualties
The earthquake, which struck on Tuesday afternoon, caused extensive damage across the region. A shopping mall and a factory were severely damaged, and fires broke out in several locations. Tens of thousands of homes were left without power, and many roads were closed due to the quake's impact.
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Challenges
Rescue teams are facing significant challenges as they search for survivors trapped in the debris. The mall in Kashima, which suffered a gas explosion following the quake, has eight confirmed survivors, though the exact number of trapped individuals remains uncertain. At the Nippon Paper Industries factory, nine people are unaccounted for. The Japanese military has mobilized 3,600 personnel and 20 aircraft to assist in relief efforts.
