At least 53 people have been rescued after a ferry carrying 116 passengers and crew capsized overnight off the coast of Guyana, Prime Minister Mark Phillips told AFP on Sunday. "We expect the number to go up as it is daylight now," he said. The ferry was traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma and sent a distress signal at around 11:01 pm Saturday.
Immediate Response
Government minister Juan Edghill confirmed the distress signal was received. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities hopeful of finding more survivors as daylight aids the search efforts.
