In a bulletin titled 'Safeguarding Our Secrets,' the alliance highlighted that Beijing is deploying sophisticated tactics on professional networking sites to target individuals with access to critical information. The primary aim is to gather high-level military, political, and economic data, which could provide China with strategic and military advantages over Western nations. The bulletin specifically warns defense, foreign affairs, and intelligence personnel, particularly those in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as journalists and think tank employees. China has consistently denied these allegations, labeling them as 'completely fabricated and motivated accusations.'
Tactics and Targets
According to the Five Eyes alliance, Chinese operatives use aggressive online recruitment tactics, offering job opportunities to entice individuals. Once recruited, these individuals are pressured to provide confidential information, with payments ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars per report, depending on the sensitivity of the information. This method has been previously highlighted by British intelligence agency MI5 and the United States, which have both issued warnings about Chinese espionage activities.
